Athlete's foot is a common fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can increase the likelihood of developing athlete's foot. Hormones such as progesterone cause changes in sweat production, leading to a warmer and more humid environment in the shoes, which is ideal for fungal growth. Poor foot hygiene during pregnancy can also contribute to this condition. As pregnancy progresses, some women may struggle to maintain proper foot care, leading to an increased risk of infections. Additionally, staying barefoot too much can expose the feet to the fungi responsible for athlete's foot, as bare feet are more susceptible to infections in public areas like swimming pool or gym locker rooms. If you are pregnant and have developed athlete’s foot, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can effectively treat this uncomfortable condition.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with Larry Slomowitz, DPM from California. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

Common Causes of Toe Pain

Toe pain can occur due to a variety of conditions, ranging from injuries to chronic medical issues. Acute causes include sprains, fractures, and blisters, which often develop from repetitive stress or trauma. Turf toe, for example, happens when the big toe bends too far back, leading to pain,  swelling, and difficulty walking. Broken toes result in bruising and tenderness, affecting mobility, while blisters, corns, and calluses can cause discomfort from friction and pressure. Ingrown toenails, a common source of toe pain, develop when the nail grows into the surrounding skin, leading to redness, swelling, and possible infection. Chronic conditions like arthritis or gout also contribute to persistent toe pain due to joint inflammation. Poor circulation, often linked to diabetes or vascular issues, may also cause discomfort, numbness, or slow wound healing in the toes. A podiatrist can evaluate the cause of your toe pain and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include medication, footwear modifications, or surgery, if necessary. If you are suffering from toe pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and appropriate treatment.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact Larry Slomowitz, DPM of California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Causes Toe Pain?

Common Causes of Foot Pain

Foot pain can stem from a variety of factors, with improper footwear being one of the most common culprits. Wearing shoes that are too tight, too loose, or lack proper support can lead to a range of foot problems. One common condition caused by poor footwear is plantar fasciitis, where inflammation occurs in the band of tissue connecting the heel to the toes, causing heel pain. Corns, which are thickened areas of skin, can also develop from pressure or friction from ill-fitting shoes, leading to discomfort. Ingrown toenails, another frequent cause of foot pain, occur when a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing irritation and swelling. Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury affecting the tendon at the back of the heel, causing pain and stiffness, especially during physical activities. Proper footwear, regular foot care, and addressing these issues early can help alleviate foot pain and prevent further complications. If you have any type of foot pain, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist who can offer you a proper diagnosis and effective relief and treatment solutions.

Kids Foot Conditions

Children’s feet go through many changes, and common issues like bow legs, knock knees, and tiptoe walking often appear during growth. Bow legs cause a gap between the knees when standing with feet together and are typical in toddlers due to natural bone development. Knock knees, where the knees touch but ankles stay apart, can emerge around ages three to five, and usually resolve by age seven. Tiptoe walking, where a child walks on the balls of their feet, may occur as they learn to walk or from tight muscles. These conditions often correct themselves as kids grow, but persistent issues or difficulty walking may signal a problem. If your child exhibits concerning problems with respect to their feet or ankles, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist promptly to prevent complications and ensure healthy foot development.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Larry Slomowitz, DPM of California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.
